At Kankakee Valley Montessori School we provide a rich curriculum for children ages 2-9 that is designed to foster cognitive development, speech and language development, strengthen fine motor skills, teach practical life skills and promote independence, confidence, kindness, grace, and courtesy. Students learn to have real responsibilities caring for and helping each other, contributing ideas, collaborating on projects and helping make group decisions. Montessorians emphasize interdependence and a sense of community.
We believe a child should love everything that he learns, for his mental and emotional growths are linked. Whatever is presented to him must be made beautiful and clear. For this reason each classroom environment is unique: prepared and modified to be the learners’ work place. The materials used at KVMS facilitate self-teaching, sensorial and naturally allowing abstract concepts to be held and manipulated in their hands.
Five distinct areas constitute the prepared environment: Practical Life, The Sensorial Areas, Mathematics, Language Arts, and Cultural Activities
The purpose of the Kankakee Valley Montessori School is to provide an early education program in which the foundations for a lifetime of creative learning are developed effectively and efficiently in the child. More specifically, to develop within the school a learning environment which surrounds the child with maximum motivation and opportunities to learn and achieve in directions consistent with his or her individual level of maturation.
The Kankakee Valley Montessori School was established in March 1968 as a private, not-for-profit preschool. The school is a member of the American Montessori Society, New York and serves children from the ages of 2 to 9 years. The development of self-confidence, independence, concentration and love of learning in a carefully prepared environment is emphasized. The program is based on the educational method developed over a century ago by Dr. Maria Montessori.
The emotional and social development of the child is an important part of the school. We seek to create a warm, loving, and respectful atmosphere. Emphasis is placed on helping children express feelings in constructive ways to develop social skills and a sense of responsibility for their own behavior within the school community. A philosophy of “freedom within limits” provides the basic framework for the children’s interaction with the environment and each other.
KVMS is accredited by the nationwide American Montessori Society (AMS)
